Lachlan R. Dale returns with ‘Daybreak’, a meditative, ambient piece born of a collaboration with Indian classical musician and artist Jatinder Singh Durhailay.
Lachlan is known for his work with psychedelic outfit Hashshashin, as well as being the label manager for Australian progressive label Art As Catharsis, and Eastern classical music label and Worlds Within Worlds. Daybreak finds Lachlan uniting the threads that are scattered across the two labels, uniting his love of Indian classical music with ritualistic, ambient drone.
The piece begins with a brooding drone, with a weight which suggests both celestial heaviness and circular movement, before building patiently with Jatinder Singh Durhailay’s vocals and Dilruba. It’s a track that speaks to peace and groundedness, with influence from ambient artists like Rafael Anton Irisarria and Abul Mogard, the Indian classical world of Ustad Sultan Khan, and the Sikh Kirtan tradition.
“Daybreak is about cycles and ritual,” explains Lachlan. “As humans, we are shaped by our habits and our practises. And we find this movement is mirrored in the universe: cycles and repetition underlie all action – from the molecular level to the heavenly bodies.”
Daybreak is the first track from Lachlan’s upcoming album, Shrines, which is expected late 2023 on Art As Catharsis.
